We’re using Miquon Math this year in addition to Singapore. I had never used Miquon before this year, but I must say I’m really liking it. It’s more of an exploratory math than a “book” math, and the kids really like it. Ladybug is studying addition in her Singapore books, so I pulled out the corresponding pages in her Miquon book. For today’s lesson, she explored the numbers 5, 7 and 9 using her Unifix cubes.
The worksheet had some number sentences with blanks to fill in ( 4 + __ ) to find the number 5. Using her cubes, she was able to fill in all the missing numbers on the sheet. Then, at the bottom of the sheet, an area was left open for her to put in number sentences that she discovered on her own. As you can see, she discovered quite a few interesting ways to come up with 5. She spent around 45 minutes exploring numbers independently with her blocks. I think this activity did more for her understanding of addition concepts than anything else we’ve done so far.
